Adverbial Inversion

Para ênfase, em linguagem formal, coloca-se um advérbio (ou uma expressão adverbial) no início de uma frase, seguido de uma inversão de ordem de palavras entre o sujeito e o verbo auxiliar:

ADVERB + AUXILIARY VERB + SUBJECT + MAIN VERB

Os advérbios aqui empregues são: de negação (ex. in no way, on no account) de restrição (ex. hardly, rarely, seldom) Exemplos: Never have I seen her so angry. Eu nunca a vi tão zangada. Seldom have I seen such a feat. Quase nunca vi um feito como este. Rarely have I seen such a violent demonstration. Quase nunca vi uma manifestação tão violenta. No sooner had I arrived home than the telephone rang. Ainda mal eu tinha chegado a casa, o telefone tocou. Hardly had I finished doing the washing-up when my wife asked me to clean the floor. Ainda mal eu tinha acabado de lavar a louça, a minha mulher pediu-me para limpar o chão. Scarcely had I hung up the phone when the doorbell rang. Ainda mal eu tinha desligado o telefone, a campainha tocou. Only by cheating did he pass the exam. Só fazendo cábulas é que ele passou no exame. Only when I explained what was going on did he understand the gravity of the situation. Depois de eu lhe ter explicado o que se estava a passar é que ele percebeu a gravidade da situação. Not only did she dance well, but she also sang beautifully. Ela não só dançou bem, mas cantou lindamente também. Not only did he work on Saturday, but on Sunday as well. Ele não só trabalhou no sábado, mas no domingo também. Not until it was too late did he tell me. Ele só me contou quando já era demasiado tarde. At no time did she lie to anybody. Ela nunca mentiu a ninguém. In no way must the truth come out. A verdade não deve vir a público de modo algum. On no account must you lie to me again. Não deves mentir-me outra vez em caso algum. Under no circumstances must you let anybody in. Não deves deixar ninguém entrar de modo algum. Little does he know about the history of his country. Ele sabe pouco da história do seu país.
